Haha, wow. Funny, when I saw this I was actually talking to Richard about how I’d been thinking of writing something about this. Why on earth it has magically become ok to appropriate Native American or First Nations culture in the craft/design/hipster-ish/fashiony community is completely beyond me! I know there’s this fascination with Devandra Banhart style New Weird America outsider art chic, and teepees look like they’d be fun….but they’re not our symbols to take an use when they’re trendy or when we’re trying to be edgy and boho. Especially when from what I’ve seen in the craft and design community is that it is overwhelmingly white. I mean, how often do you see actual First Nations folks selling at indy craft shows?
I’m sure this isn’t a malicious thing, but the amazing lack of self awareness astounds me.
